Central PA stream restoration efforts: the Chesapeake Conservancy's Live Stake Collaborative
Bucknell University is in the upstream region of the Chesapeake Bay watershed, so local stream restoration efforts are important for the health and habitat of our local rivers but are also critical for keeping the Chesapeake Bay healthy. Sediment and chemical runoff from agriculture threatens the watershed, and our efforts to improve stream bank vegetation help reduce that runoff and improve stream habitat.
The Chesapeake Conservancy has a Live Stake Cooperative, including groups of student volunteers from Bucknell University. Our mission is to collect and plant cuttings of shrubs that thrive in river bank (i.e., riparian zone) environments, so that we can improve stream health of local rivers for very low costs. We are working on COVID precautions, but look out for collection and planting dates in spring 2021! |

Other service-related updates and opportunities
Linn Conservancy is an amazing land conservation organization that serves Union County and contiguous areas in central PA: linnconservancy.org/
In November 2020, fellow Bucknell prof Jeff Trop and I had a great time teaching kids about the geology of local hiking spot Dale's Ridge to benefit the conservancy and the Lewisburg Children's Museum. Below are some pictures from those fun events. Check out the conservancy site to stay up-to-date on future opportunities!
